The Central Cathedral is the primary setting for the climax of the Alicization arc. Kirito and Eugeo first enroll in the Swordsman Academy in North Centoria, and months later, after cutting down the Gigas Cedar, they break the Taboo Index by killing abductors to prevent a rape. They are captured and about to be executed when Cardinal saves them; she later provides information and assistance as they escape. Cardinal offers guidance and support, but does not directly give them the ability to defeat the Integrity Knights or Administrator. The two trek their way up the tower, defeating several Integrity Knights along the way: Deusolbert (the knight who took Alice away), Linel and Fizel (the two youngest Integrity Knights), and Fanatio.
