After Kirito returned to the Underworld with his real-world memories intact, he helped Eugeo cut down the Gigas Cedar. The two then departed for the Central Cathedral and enrolled in the North Centoria Imperial Swordsmanship Academy. About two years in, the two prevented an attempted violation of their pages and killed their attackers, which caused them to break the Taboo Index. They were imprisoned but escaped and were saved by Cardinal, who gave them skills and knowledge to take down the Integrity Knights, defeat Administrator, and fight the impending invasion by the Dark Territory. They trekked up the tower, where Kirito froze Deusolbert with the Blue Rose Sword; Deusolbert was later freed and fought alongside them against Quinella, and they outsmarted Linel and Fizel. During the fight with Fanatio on the 30th floor, Kirito and Alice were separated from Eugeo. Kirito was later forced to fight Eugeo on the 50th floor, where Eugeo had been corrupted into becoming an Integrity Knight. During the fight, Kirito broke the sword controlling Eugeo, returning him to his senses. After a long battle with Quinella, Eugeo died in Kirito's arms.
