Death Gun is a player in the virtual reality massively multiplayer online role-playing game Gun Gale Online (GGO), who became infamous for allegedly killing other players in the real world through the game. The series chronicles the investigation into Death Gun, a serial killer whose victims die in reality after being shot by him in GGO. Kirito enters GGO and meets Sinon, who helps him prepare for the next Bullet of Bullets tournament, where Death Gun is expected to appear. During the BoB, Kirito deduces Death Gun's method of killing and faces him in a battle, winning. After logging out, Kirito rushes to Shino Asada's house and saves her from the real-world Death Gun killer, Kyoji Shinkawa. The two later discover there was one last person in the Death Gun group: Atsushi Kanomoto, otherwise known as Johnny Black.

The Bullet of Bullets tournament begins, and Kirito learns of Sinon's past. After most of the other players have been taken out, Kirito and Sinon team up to devise a plan to take down Death Gun. Kirito deduces Death Gun's method of killing and faces him in a battle, winning. He warns Sinon to be careful as he logs out. Once he does so, he rushes over to Shino Asada's house and saves her from the Death Gun killer on the reality side, Kyoji Shinkawa. The two reconvene with Kikuoka, who then also discovers that there was one last person in the Death Gun group: Atsushi Kanomoto, otherwise known as Johnny Black, and the last known surviving member of Laughing Coffin.
